PPLive P2P television network software

PPLive is a peer-to-peer streaming video network created in Huazhong University of Science and Technology, People's Republic of China. It is part of a new generation of P2P applications, that combine P2P and IPTV, called P2PTV. In P2P technology, everyone becomes a broadcaster without the cost of traditional streaming. The more users are online, the faster the programs can be loaded.

The software integrated peer-to-peer technology so it can provide the users with smooth TV programs with no interceptions.

Since PPLive video stream depends on a network connection and number of peers, occasional glitches such as short pauses during viewing or re-buffering are not unusual. In some cases, a stream can stop completely if source video file crashes or not enough peers available to establish a smooth streaming.

PPlive TV signals are mainly from the cable TV. Some channels can not be shown in PPLive. Currently, most of the media contents are TV channels from China.

Basic operation
1.
After a user selects a TV station from the list, which is accessed by right-clicking the PPLive icon in the Microsoft Windows system tray, the program will then connect to peers and buffer the stream. PPLive typically uses ports 8008 TCP and 4004 UDP to connect to peers.

When the buffer is reasonably full, PPLive launches your media player, either RealPlayer or Windows Media Player, pointing it to read a stream from a local port (usually 8080),
3.
Closing down your Media player will not end the stream. The PPLive program will remain in the background streaming data until you close it from the tray or change the channel.

Compatibility

The PPLive program is installable on Asian and English language versions of Windows XP. By default, it uses Windows Media Player and RealPlayer. The media player that is opened depends on the type of stream.

PPStream - streaming p2p Internet TV

PPStream is a network for live media streaming, or you can call it a P2P Streaming Internet TV. In principle it's similar to BitTorrent(BT).

It can broadcast TV programs stably and smoothly to broadband users. Compared to traditional stream media, PPStream adopts p2p - streaming technology and supports full-scale visit with tens of thousands of users online. Its client software can be used as a webpage or as a desktop program.

Currently the majority of PPStream TV channels are from China, Hong-Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.

How to use PPStream

1. Download the PPStream software and install it. Alternatively, you can also view it online.
2.Run PPStream and you'll see 3 panes. The left one is the channel list in which the channels are sorted according to popularity.

Hint: During soccer or football live broadcast, you can be quite sure that TV channels
broadcasting them will be ones of the most popular (thus they will be on top of the channel
list).

Hint: The channel list has 3 columns: TV channel name, stream quality (measured in Kbps),
and the number of users connected to this channel. The more users connected to the channel,
the more likely you will be able to watch it smoothly and stably.

The majority of channels have a description (albeit most of them are in Chinese language). To view a channel description, right click on the channel, and click on the last item.
Hint: Save the URL address of your favorite TV channel as a shortcut with your own
description (it helps a lot when you don't know Chinese language).

The right pane contains a list of recommended TV programs, TV schedule links and announcements. On top of it is a highly recommended show.

Hint: If you click on a link with an icon of a clock and a calender, you will see the full
schedule for the channel (albeit in Chinese language). You may also schedule your application
to switch to a particular channel at a particular time.

And in the center there is an embedded Windows Media Player in which TV stream is played once a channel is chosen.

P2P Streaming Television

All streaming media players buffer segments of audio/video streams before actually showing them. After buffering a segment a media player shows it, and at the same time the media player starts buffering the next segment. Ideally there shouldn't be any sound or video frame freezes. Unfortunately in reality internet servers and internet channels often get overloaded and users get sound and/or video frame freezes. That is where peer-to-peer (p2p) technology can help. Software like PPLive, PPStream, Coolstreaming, QQLive, SopCast, Feidian, TV Ants allows users to watch streaming media (TV channels) based on BitTorrent (BT) p2p technology.

PeerStreaming is an on-demand peer-to-peer (P2P) media streaming system. The behavior of a PeerStreaming client is very much like an ordinary media player: it streams and plays whatever media the user desires, starting at whatever point he/she desires. However under the hood, the media is delivered from multiple peers to the client. The serving peers can be the media server, but more commonly are the clients that have received the media in a previous streaming session.Leveraging the network and storage resources of the P2P network and retrieving a majority part of the media from nearby peers, PeerStreaming greatly improves the streaming media quality, reduces the server load, and eases the traffic on the network.
